About Urban Orchid Crest

What this is

Urban Orchid Crest is a short reading list. It points to stories that other publishers have printed about city transit passes, national parks and the cost of travel, and it adds two plain sentences about each one. There is no reporting here, no team of editors and no archive stretching back years. The list holds 12 notes today and grows by hand, when the person who keeps it comes across a story that is easy to summarise fairly.

What it is not

It is not a Japanese travel guide and not a news service. The stories on the list concern the United States, Canada and Europe, and none of them describes a pass or subsidy that you can apply for in Japan. Nothing here is an offer, an application service or advice on whether you qualify for anything. Before you travel, ask the transit operator, airline or park authority named in the story.

How stories are chosen

• The story is about fares or passes, a national park, or what a ticket costs
• It can be summed up in two sentences without losing the point
• Stories about crime, health, elections or security are left out, because short summaries of those are easy to get wrong
• Where one story appears under several headlines at different publishers, the list keeps the most useful one or two
• No one pays to be included and no one pays to be left out

Using other people's work

A note never reproduces a story: no paragraphs, no photographs and no long quotations. It gives the headline, the publisher, the date the publisher gave, and a summary in our own words. The date has not been checked by us. We did not keep the exact web address of each story, so a note links to the publisher's home page and tells you the headline to look for.

Corrections and removal

If a summary is wrong, or a publisher would like a note taken down, write to editorial@urbanorchidcrest.com. Please include the address of the note and the detail in question. The list is looked after by one person alongside other work, so no reply time is promised, but a note that a rights holder objects to is removed once the message has been read.
